How to care for a curly synthetic wig

A curly synthetic wig has one big advantage: you don't need heat to make the curls look good. The fiber has a memory effect and, with water, it goes back to the shape it had when it left the factory. What it does need is slightly different care from a straight wig, especially when detangling and drying it.
Day to day
Detangle it with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, never with a fine-bristle brush: it opens the curl and makes it frizzy. Work in sections, starting at the nape and moving up, and on each strand go from the ends to the roots, holding it so you don't pull on the cap.
If the curls look flat, spray a little water and reshape them with your fingers: water reactivates the curl pattern. A spray conditioner for synthetic fiber every time you put the wig on helps prevent frizz, and if you want more defined waves you can use a wig styling mousse.
The area that suffers most is the nape, from rubbing against clothes, coat collars or the back of the sofa. On long curly wigs the ends also tangle sooner, so check those areas more often.
How to wash it
If you wear it every day, wash it roughly every seven wears. Use cold water and a shampoo for synthetic fiber, without rubbing or wringing: soak it, leave the shampoo on for a few minutes, rinse and repeat with the conditioner.
Press out the excess water with a towel, without rubbing, put it on a wig stand and spray a little conditioner. Shape the curls with your fingers and check that no hair is rolled up inside the cap.
Then wrap it in the net it came with and let it air-dry. That way the curls don't stretch under their own weight and they dry in place.
Never use a hairdryer, straightener or curling iron on a standard synthetic wig: heat ruins it for good. If your wig is HD fiber, it can take some heat to redefine a curl, at 130 ĀŗC maximum, with the fiber damp and anti-static spray.
How to store it
Keep it in its box with the net on rather than hanging: when it hangs, the weight stretches the curls.
